The various stages of criminal arrest can be broken down into 3 categories. These are:
- Arrest, booking, and bail.
- Arraignment and plea bargain.
- Trial, sentencing, and appeal.
During the first stage, the defendant is taken into custody, processed, and has their personal information documented. They are then given the opportunity to pay bail and leave jail until their arraignment. This is the first scheduled court hearing and is where the defendant’s lawyer will work with the judge to try and come up with a plea bargain. If none can be reached, then the defendant will come back for their trial where a jury will decide their fate.
